Chapter Nine

It seemed as if every time I had a conversation with Betty Duncanson, my equilibrium was thrown out of whack. Why couldn’t these people leave me alone so that I could move on with my life? Because there was nothing they could say that would make me bend to their wishes. If Ms. Duncanson thought for one second that I would go running to the hospital to see Taj because of a little tummy ache, she was sadly mistaken. I doubted that Taj had traces of botulism in his bloodstream. It was all an act to get us alone together and I was not about to fall for it.

Taj was certainly a momma’s boy. Was there anything he did not tell his mother? Why lie to her about us sleeping together? Hot air shot out through my nostrils as I pulled my car through the entrance of my condo. When I stepped out of the driver side, I saw Reuben’s stepmother’s jeep turning into the gate. We were scheduled to see a movie that night, but I was suddenly not in the mood. All I wanted to do was to scream my frustrations at someone. When Reuben approached me, luckily for him, his warm smile disarmed quite a bit of my churlishness. He reached over and kissed me on the cheek.

I stared at the cast on his hand and asked, “How was your first day back to work?”

“Good, I guess. I canceled one of my nutritional classes to take a little rest.”

I squinted my eyes. “Maybe you went back to work too soon. Your body is still recuperating from that accident.”

“Well,” Reuben grinned. “It won’t stop me from checking to see how my favorite girl is doing.”

I playfully rolled my eyes at him, as I prepared to change the subject. “I want to talk to you about something. Is it okay if we cancel our movie date and go up to my condo instead?”

“Uh oh, this sounds serious. What did I do now?”

“You didn’t do anything. It’s about Taj – I know I promised never to bring up his name again, but I really need to get some things off my chest if we are going to proceed with this relationship between us.”

Reuben took my laptop bag and hung it on his shoulder. “By all means. Whatever you need, Sierra, I am here to fulfil that.”

I nodded my thanks and then continued toward my front door. Once inside, Reuben went directly to the kitchen to brew some fresh coffee. I used the opportunity to change out of my work clothes into something a little more comfortable. As I was returning to the living room, Reuben was coming toward me with two white mugs in his hands.

“Is it okay that I sit next to you?” he asked.

“Of course, why would you even ask a question like that?”

He grinned. “I don’t want you to be tempted to kiss me.”

I waited until he rested the mugs on the table before hitting him with a cushion.
